Literary Period: Realism and Naturalism

The Open Boat, by Stephen Crane

If "The Open Boat" is a metaphor for life, what do the boat, the ocean, the shore, etc. represent? What is Crane trying to say about life? Do we agree? What does Crane seem to be implying about the concept of Salvation?

Realism Comparison

Kate Chopin (all stories), Stephen Crane (all stories), and Edith Wharton (The Age of Innocence):

1. Consider the authors' lives and works and compare
2. Compare the similarities and differences in the views of social aspects, and the views of Nature depicted in these works.
